The Scottish North American Leadership Conference meets annually and for 2017, the conference is being held in Canada! This is a first and we are thrilled to be hosting the Scottish North American Diaspora! The conference is taking place during the celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday.
Canada’s first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald was Gaelic speaking and had ancestral ties to Rogart, where his grandparents were crofters before being removed during the Sutherland Clearances. Our 13th Prime Minister, John G. Diefenbaker, had ancestral ties to Kildonan through his mother, who was a Bannerman. John G’s great grandparents were also cleared and emigrated to the Red River Settlement in Manitoba. One of Canada’s top brewers was established by a Scot whose family were part of the clearances, having lived in Halkirk.
We are excited to be hosting our American cousins for the celebration of our 150th birthday and look forward to having you join us as well.
